Ignore your learning style
Being a visual learner is one of the most persistent myths in education, and it has been tested properly.
Do this
Match the format to the material, not to yourself. Geography wants maps, music wants sound, procedures want doing. Stop filtering out useful material because it arrived in the wrong modality.
Why it works
The meshing hypothesis - that teaching in someone's preferred style improves learning - requires a specific crossover interaction to appear in the data. Studies designed properly to detect it consistently do not find it. People have preferences; those preferences do not predict what they learn best from.
Where it fails
Preferences are real and can affect engagement and enjoyment, which is not nothing. And some material genuinely does have a best modality - that is a fact about the content, not about the learner.
How you’ll know
If you have ever avoided a good explanation because it was 'not how I learn', that is the cost this myth is charging you.
