Helium was discovered on the Sun before it was found on Earth
An unexplained yellow line in an eclipse spectrum, in 1868.
During a solar eclipse, astronomers observed a spectral line matching no known element. It was named helium after helios, the Greek sun. It was not isolated on Earth until 1895 – the only element first identified somewhere other than this planet.
