OK began as a joke about bad spelling
From a fad for comic abbreviations in 1830s Boston newspapers.
OK is generally traced to oll korrect, a deliberately misspelled abbreviation printed in the Boston Morning Post in 1839 during a craze for such jokes. It survived because Martin Van Buren’s 1840 campaign adopted it, his nickname being Old Kinderhook. It is now among the most widely understood words on Earth.
