Zero took centuries to be accepted in Europe
Some Italian cities banned it as an invitation to fraud.
Zero as a number, rather than a placeholder, developed in India and reached Europe via Arabic mathematics. Resistance was practical and philosophical: Roman numerals had no need of it, and merchants worried the new digits could be altered easily. Florence restricted Arabic numerals in 1299. Acceptance took roughly 400 years.
