Worth knowing Habits

Start at a moment that already feels like a beginning

Mondays, birthdays and the first of the month genuinely do work better - and there is a catch.

Moderate evidenceReal support, but smaller effects or fewer replications than you would want.
What it costs Timing

Do this

Attach a new behaviour to a natural temporal landmark: a new month, a move, a job change, a birthday. Use the boundary deliberately rather than waiting for motivation.

Why it works

Search interest in diet, gym attendance and commitment-contract creation all spike after temporal landmarks. The proposed mechanism is that the landmark creates a break with an imperfect past self, making aspirational behaviour feel more available.

Where it fails

The same mechanism licenses waiting - 'I will start Monday' is the fresh start effect working against you all week. There is also evidence that landmarks can disrupt ongoing good behaviour by breaking a streak's continuity.

How you’ll know

If you have used more than two fresh starts on the same goal, the timing is not the problem.
