Chess has more possible games than the universe has atoms
Not more positions. More games. And it is not close.
A conservative estimate of the number of distinct chess games runs to roughly 10 to the power of 120. The observable universe contains something like 10 to the power of 80 atoms. This is why chess cannot be solved by simply listing every possibility, and why strong play required a different idea entirely.
