The thought you keep circling

Why the mind returns to a problem it has no intention of solving, and what actually interrupts the loop.

Rumination is not thinking. It has the texture of thinking — it is effortful, it is about a real problem, it feels like work — but it does not move. Thinking narrows. Rumination circles.

The usual advice is to stop, which is roughly as useful as being told to relax. What tends to work better is changing the question. Rumination asks why: why did this happen, why am I like this. Problem-solving asks what: what is the next thing I could do. The first question has no floor. The second one ends.
