Energy produced by fusion in the core is absorbed and re-emitted countless times on its way out, taking a random walk through dense plasma. Estimates for the journey from core to surface range from around ten thousand to over a hundred thousand years. The final 150 million kilometres to Earth takes eight minutes and twenty seconds.
