A Greenland shark can be older than the United States
One studied individual was estimated at close to 400 years.
Radiocarbon dating of the eye lens nucleus, which forms before birth and does not turn over, yielded ages up to roughly 392 years with wide error bars. They grow about a centimetre a year and are thought not to reach sexual maturity until around 150.
