Surgery before 1846 was conducted on fully conscious patients.
The first public demonstration of ether anaesthesia was at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1846, seventy years after American independence. Speed was the primary surgical virtue beforehand – the best surgeons were measured in seconds. Almost all of modern surgery depends on a technique younger than the country.
