Betelgeuse may already have exploded
If it has, the news is still in transit.
The red supergiant in Orion is roughly 550 light years away and near the end of its life. If it went supernova today, we would not know for centuries. Conversely it may have detonated during the Middle Ages and the light is still on its way. When it arrives it should be visible in daylight.
