And then stopped entirely, and then released again.
Passing light through an ultracold Bose-Einstein condensate, researchers slowed a pulse to around 17 metres per second – slower than a cyclist. Later experiments halted light completely, storing the information in the atomic medium and reconstituting the pulse afterwards.
