Testing yourself beats re-reading, and it feels worse
The study method that feels most productive is the one that works least.
Closing the book and trying to recall produces far better long-term retention than re-reading the same page. But retrieval feels effortful and error-prone, while re-reading feels fluent, so students consistently choose the weaker method. Difficulty and learning are not the same signal.
