The enteric nervous system contains an estimated 200 to 600 million neurons embedded in the gut wall – comparable to a small mammal’s brain. It coordinates digestion autonomously, and continues to work even when the connection to the brain is severed. It is a genuine second nervous system, not a metaphor.
