Your mitochondria come only from your mother
An unbroken maternal line, traceable back tens of thousands of years.
Mitochondria carry their own small genome and are inherited almost exclusively through the egg. That makes mitochondrial DNA a clean maternal record, which is how researchers traced a most recent common maternal ancestor for living humans. Rare cases of paternal transmission have now been documented, so ‘only’ is very slightly too strong.
