Mitochondria carry their own small genome and are inherited almost exclusively through the egg. That makes mitochondrial DNA a clean maternal record, which is how researchers traced a most recent common maternal ancestor for living humans. Rare cases of paternal transmission have now been documented, so ‘only’ is very slightly too strong.
