Bees understand the concept of zero

A concept that took human mathematics thousands of years to formalise.

Trained to fly toward the panel with fewer shapes, honeybees correctly chose an empty panel over one with shapes – placing zero at the low end of a numerical scale. They can also be trained to recognise individual human faces, using a brain of under a million neurons.
