Bananas are clones and the last variety was wiped out

Commercial bananas are seedless and propagated from cuttings, making every Cavendish essentially one organism with no genetic variation to resist disease. The previous dominant variety, Gros Michel, was destroyed by Panama disease in the mid-20th century. A new strain of the same fungus is now spreading through Cavendish plantations.
