Mantis shrimp see differently, but probably not better
Twelve colour receptor types to our three - and worse colour discrimination.
The long-repeated claim that mantis shrimp perceive unimaginable colours turned out to be wrong. Testing showed they discriminate wavelengths less finely than humans. The many receptor types appear to support fast, coarse recognition rather than fine analysis – a different strategy, not a superior one.
