Freedom is heavier than it sounds
Sartre on being condemned to choose, and why so much of adult life is spent quietly avoiding it.
Sartre’s claim is not that freedom is pleasant. It is that it is inescapable, and that we spend enormous effort pretending otherwise — through roles, obligations, and the very useful phrase “I had no choice”.
He called that bad faith. It is not lying to other people. It is a story you tell yourself well enough to believe.
