Potassium is essential to life, and a small fraction of natural potassium is the radioactive isotope potassium-40. Bananas are potassium-rich, so they emit a small amount of radiation – the basis of the informal banana equivalent dose used to explain radiation risk. The human body contains far more potassium than a banana.
