Fact
Naming a feeling turns its volume down
Saying the words 'I am anxious about this' does something an hour of vague dread does not.
Putting an emotion into plain language is linked with reduced activity in the amygdala and increased activity in the prefrontal cortex. The effect is called affect labelling, and it works even when people are not trying to feel better – simply describing the feeling accurately appears to be enough.
