Remembering something changes it
The memory you trust most is the one you have edited most often.
Recall is not playback. Retrieving a memory briefly destabilises it, and it is written back afterwards – a process called reconsolidation. Each retrieval is an opportunity for distortion, which means the memories you revisit often are the ones most reshaped by everything you have learned since.
