Some people have no mind’s eye at all
Asked to picture an apple, a small share of humanity sees nothing whatsoever.
Aphantasia is the absence of voluntary visual imagery. People with it know what an apple looks like and can describe one perfectly, but experience no picture. Most only discover it in adulthood, on realising that ‘picture a beach’ was never a figure of speech for everyone else. At the other end sit people with unusually vivid imagery, called hyperphantasia.
