Time does not actually slow down in an emergency
Researchers dropped people from a height to test it. The famous feeling turns out to be a trick of memory.
Volunteers in genuine free fall wore a device displaying digits flickering slightly too fast to read. If perception truly sped up, they should have been able to read it. They could not. Frightening events lay down unusually dense memories, and the brain reads that density afterwards as duration – so it feels slow only in retrospect.
