A placebo can work when you know it is a placebo
Patients were told outright the pills were inert. They improved anyway.
In open-label placebo trials, participants are told plainly that they are receiving a pill with no active ingredient, and are given a rationale for why it might still help. Several trials in conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome and chronic low back pain have found meaningful symptom improvement despite full disclosure.
