A mirror can relieve pain in a limb that is gone

The hand was amputated years ago. It was still clenched, and it still hurt.

Many amputees feel a phantom limb, sometimes locked in a painful position. Placing a mirror so the intact limb appears where the missing one was, then moving it, can give the brain visual evidence that the limb has unclenched – and the pain can ease. It is a treatment made almost entirely of illusion.
