Your body produces its own morphine-like chemicals
The word endorphin is a contraction of endogenous morphine.
Endorphins are peptides that bind the same receptors as opiates, produced in response to pain, exertion and stress. They were discovered in the 1970s when researchers asked why the brain would have receptors for a chemical from a poppy – and concluded it must make something similar itself.
