Antarctica is a desert
The driest continent on Earth is buried under most of its fresh water.
Deserts are defined by precipitation, not temperature, and much of Antarctica receives less than 50 millimetres a year – comparable to the Sahara’s driest zones. The ice sheet accumulated over millions of years from tiny annual additions. The McMurdo Dry Valleys have seen almost no rain for around two million years.
