A lake in Cameroon suffocated 1,700 people in one night
No eruption, no earthquake. The water simply exhaled.
In 1986, Lake Nyos released an enormous cloud of carbon dioxide that had accumulated in its depths from volcanic activity below. Denser than air, it flowed downhill into villages and displaced the oxygen. Engineers have since installed pipes to vent the gas continuously and prevent a repeat.
