Fact
Ants have been farming for tens of millions of years
Fungus gardens, crop tending, pest control, and antibiotic-producing partners.
Leafcutter ants do not eat leaves; they use them to feed a cultivated fungus that is their real food. The system involves weeding, waste disposal and bacteria on the ants’ bodies producing antimicrobials against garden pests. It has been running for roughly 50 to 60 million years – long before human agriculture.
