Earth’s core is roughly as hot as the surface of the Sun
About 5,400 degrees Celsius, a few thousand kilometres beneath your feet.
The inner core is solid iron and nickel, kept solid despite the temperature by immense pressure. Its temperature is inferred from seismic wave behaviour and laboratory experiments compressing iron. The heat drives the convection that generates Earth’s magnetic field, which shields the atmosphere from the solar wind.
