The fax machine predates the telephone

Patented in 1843, more than thirty years before the telephone.

Alexander Bain patented an electric printing telegraph capable of transmitting images over wire in 1843. Commercial fax services operated in France from 1865. Bell’s telephone patent came in 1876. The technology we think of as obsolete is older than the one that replaced it.
