Humans have fewer genes than a water flea
Around 20,000. The tiny crustacean Daphnia has about 31,000.
When the human genome was sequenced, the gene count came in far below predictions – roughly comparable to a nematode worm and well below several plants and invertebrates. Complexity turns out to come less from the number of genes than from how they are regulated, spliced and combined.
