Between roughly 11,000 and 5,000 years ago, a shift in Earth’s orbital tilt strengthened the African monsoon, turning the Sahara into grassland and lake country. Rock art at Wadi Sura in Egypt shows human figures apparently swimming. The change back to desert took only centuries.
