During the Carboniferous, vast quantities of plant matter were buried rather than decomposed, forming most of the world’s coal. One popular explanation is that fungi had not yet evolved to break down lignin. This is now contested – many researchers argue the burial was driven by tectonics and swampy, oxygen-poor conditions instead.
