These east African rodents live up to 30 years with remarkably low cancer rates, produce an unusual form of hyaluronan that appears to block tumour growth, and lack the pain response to acid and capsaicin. They also cannot regulate body temperature, and live in eusocial colonies with a single breeding queen.
