The layout emerged from a mix of telegraph operators’ needs, mechanical constraints and commercial iteration rather than a deliberate plan to reduce speed. Historical work on the Sholes typewriter’s development found no evidence for the sabotage story. Studies also find Dvorak’s speed advantage is far smaller than claimed.
