The Amazon is fertilised by dust from the Sahara
Millions of tonnes a year, blown across an ocean.
Satellite measurements show roughly 27 million tonnes of Saharan dust reaching the Amazon basin annually, carrying phosphorus that rainforest soils badly lack. Much of it originates in the Bodele Depression in Chad, an ancient lake bed. Two ecosystems on different continents are chemically linked by wind.
