Earth’s atmosphere was poisoned by its own life

Around 2.4 billion years ago, cyanobacteria began producing oxygen through photosynthesis. To the anaerobic life then dominant, oxygen was toxic. The resulting Great Oxidation Event wiped out much of the biosphere and may have triggered a global glaciation. Every oxygen-breathing organism since descends from the survivors.
